My Story

Thank you for visiting! My name is Veronica and I am a writer and artist (illustration and hand lettering). I studied screenwriting at Biola University, and in 2005 graduated from their Torrey Honors Institute. This was an Oxford style Great Books program that had a profound influence on me.

I’m passionate about a classical, well-rounded education for everyone, and I believe that it’s never too early to start. My mother often says that books are not a luxury, they are a necessity. I want to foster an early love of reading because I believe reading as much as possible makes us better people.

I specifically want to make the concepts of the Great Books accessible to young readers, and have a few passion projects aimed at doing just that:

  1. Fiction series: young adult novels in which the influential thinkers of the past make a physical comeback to address the problems of a dystopian society.
  2. Literophile project: hand-lettered bookmarks with quotations from the Great Books and about reading.
  3. Crochet reading companions: crocheted animal plushies that introduce kids to literature’s most beloved/influential authors and characters.

My blog is a weekly publication in which I share my writing journey and offer means of overcoming creative resistance. There are always barriers to doing your best work, and I’m here to help you recognize those roadblocks and push through them as I push through them in my own projects.

I would love it if you shared some of your creative struggles with me. Drop me a line if you have any questions, comments, or just want to say hello!

I met you at Patchwork in Santa Ana. I was originally going to email you because I was possibly interested in having you knit a sweater for my little granddaughter. But then I read your top 2 blog posts, and your About Me section. I loved what you had to say about so many things. The subject of the book you are writing about sounds fascinating, and would be amazing for book clubs to discuss. I LOVE the idea of crocheted literary characters for kids. They would be able to cuddle them while reading, and would be reminded of the book they loved later on. Every time they see it, they will remember different aspects of the book. I would have, anyway. You are very brave mentioning depression. It is still sort of a taboo subject. I must say, not all medications cause the depressed person to lose the highs and lows. My sister had to go on some medication, and she is just as fun and goofy as she ever was. It just helps her to get through life’s HARD times. She couldn’t get out of bed. Now she handles the several very difficult problems (enough for 25 people). She would have preferred not to take anything, but she needed it. Just thought I’d mention it. Anyway, I am looking forward to reading your book. I don’t know if it is meant for adults or kids, but the subject is intriguing. I enjoyed reading your blogs, so I’m guessing that I would enjoy reading your book. 🙂 I tried to keep this short, but that is not my strong suit. Happy writing, illustrating, and knitting. Oh, do you know how much it would cost me to have you knit a sweater for my little grand sweetie? She’s a big girl for her age…she will be about 12 months when she will need a sweater (summer is days away), but she is chunky. So I’m thinking that at 1 year she will need a 2 year old size (to allow for layering). Gosh, I’m making her sound HUGE. She’s just chunky. But a little bit bigger is better than a little bit littler 🙂 My writing is probably driving you crazy about now. But I like to be goofy. If you don’t have time to knit, don’t want to knit, don’t think it’s worth the little bit of money you will make, it’s not a problem IN THE LEAST. Kids have way too many clothes, and can’t wear them all, anyway. Again 🙂

  2. Hi! I met you at the Bixby Knolls Village Bizarre. I’ve bought 3 beanies from you and always get compliments on them.
I just read your blog on depression and it really resonated with me. I too don’t use antidepressants, but absolutely agree that isn’t good for all. It’s an uphill (as in Mount Everest) battle, but we do our best. Especially when you have to be social.
The last time I saw you, I said “You’re the reason I’m here “. I was looking for beanies. It’s always nice to find understanding where and when you least expect it. Keep up your beautiful work and reading outreach.
